Green Party leader Elizabeth May challenges Peter McKay

March 18, 2007 – Green Party leader Elizabeth May decides to run in Foreign Affairs Minister Peter McKay’s home riding in the next federal election.

May’s denies rumours that she made a deal with the Liberal Party so they would not run a candidate against her in Central Nova.

May also laments the loss of the former Progressive Conservative party, claiming the current Conservative party is too close to George Bush.

  1. lol EPIC FAIL!!! i believe they lost 50 percent of their seats in canada… so now they are down to 1. haha the greens should go smoke dope and listen to the beetles when ever politics come up… thats what they do best.

  2. I hear that Mulroney won an environmental award–something that Dion never did! I guess, it is difficult to set priorities and Dion just “never got it done”! Right?

  3. A couple of typo’s are acceptable in this blogging environment; however, you are over the top in your spelling and grammar. Obama was pleased to meet a decisive leader (he was anxious to learn from Mr. Harper) and we are so blessed to have such an individual as PM! You must agree……?

  4. were blessed to have stephen harper omg not at all hes ruining our country killing our enviroment not doing much about the economy and the only way he can win iis by last election he totally slander dins reputation din my not have been the best choice but hes better then harper and jack and now we have the great iggnatieff he will make a great primeminister he is an intellectual. im just sorry that obamas first foriegn visit he had to meet an idiot like harper.

  5. no u see your living in the stone age because coal is a very dirty thing to burn im not a green by any means but have u actualy not heard of altrnative energy like electric nuclear geotheremal not dirty fuels umm and yes global warming makes for colder winters and hotter summers oh ya stephen harper is the worst well second worse after mulroney he has done nothing but bad things during his tenure as pm. no conservatives like u need to get there head straight and there facts right.

  6. ok now its over. and more people in nova scotia had lostthere jobs. peter dont care cause his pocket is still full with the tax payers money. i bet he still sleep good at night. thanks peter for running this county we call pictou county and province and soon help harpperfinsh his job by runnning the whole country in fucking ground

  7. The mean temperature in the last decade has fallen about .6 degress. No sun spots now for over 2 years and none are expected for about another 30 years, so the temperature will fall even more. Why don’t you study this instead of just shooting off your big mouth.

  8. Put down the bottle! Wake up and smell the coffee! You crazies dancing around the maypole of Global Warming have become a joke!
Thank goodness we have Stephen Harper. We are blessed. Agreed?

  9. You green supporters are just as stupid as the NDPers and just as rude and ill mannered. Furtunately some real Canadian still have their heads on straight and supported our great Prime Minister Harper.
May wanted to shut down all the coal fired electric plants in Canada, which would have put the country back into the stone age. What a fucked up freak.
You guys need to look at yourselves in the mirror and smarten up. Global warming my ass, the tempuerature is falling, NO SUN SPOTS!!!!!

  10. Way to go , The green party took a wacko of votes from the liberals or the NDP who could have with those votes defeated Tony Clement. My grand childeren will have to breath dirty Harper air ect. Just because you insisted on having a piece of power , Why not get in all partys put forward ideas ect and go with the majority. My family will not have the chance to vote for anyone as we are homeless in 15 days. Thanks to harpers lack of support

  11. HAHA what a nut, first going against Peter McKay… then having to retract her statements on stratigic voting, then losing to McKay…I do agree with one thing she said, obviously Peter McKay is a very popular local MP.

  12. Wow i didn’t realize what an idiot she was until i found out that she was running in against peter Mckay. Why the fuck would she do that. Her party needs seats or else people are just gona consider her another fringe party. She SHOULD have run somewhere in BC or atleast somewhere that has alot of green support in past elections. HOLY FUCK!

  13. let me in! let me in! let me in!
By my records the Tory governments of Canada have always been the most Green! and I do not mean the Green that the last Grit government filled their pockets with…

  14. I’m surprised by all of the spammers add haters here. I’ve noticed them barking on other similar videos. The Greens must be doing something right to be getting all of this attention from closedminded partisan youtubers!

“First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.” – Gandhi, describing the stages of a winning strategy of nonviolent activism.

  15. say what you want folks. but i watched this video and i felt relieved after it was over. knowing that she too noticed that canada is becoming the usa and following in bushes foot steps. dont vote green or vote green. just please people. dont vote harper. this changed alot. dis her or even dis me. but she did make some key points. so all im saying is u have the right not to vote but please listen to her

  16. Yes she is crazy. May can’t even tell you how much co2 is in the air. She is nothing but a big mouth shouting for fair treatment for women in politics. The greens tax plans are nothing more than what a high school kid would put together for an assignment. Don’t waste your votes on this party, they can’t do anything for you, it is just a waste of your vote.

  17. Who invited this sow to the dance. She talks for the sake of talking. Nothing of value here. She so happy she basks in McKays light, – but she doesnt have a clue as to how shes going to get home. Totally clueless!!! Were all in very big trouble if she ever gets an ounce of power. Not a clue as to whats going on.

  18. I can’t believe McKay cancelled the Knife contract providing Canadian made knives to the Canadian Forces in favour of getting cheap Chinese made garbage! Yeah, brilliant decision there Peter the Pancake Flipper!
    Flip Flop Flip Flop!

  19. Why dont you trying volunteering some of your precious time in her campaign just this once too Belldave? If Liz May is a lightweight …then George bush is a genius.God bless you woman for speaking, unearthing and decipering the truth for millions of Canadians…. rise up,and shake off apathy

  20. ETA: what was so great about the old PC’s? The fact is the old “Red Tories” were always a minority and Harper isn’t governing all that different from Mulroney (i.e. slavishly pro-U.S., courting Quebec, etc.) and if I were an ex-Reformer I’d think he’s a total sellout. As for the argument that the new Conservatives are illegitimate because they’re not part of the Canadian tradition, how can she justify running for and leading an even bigger abberation – the Green Party?!

  21. Unfortunately for May Central Nova is a horrible fit. The Greens only got 1.5% of the vote last time and the Libs came in third with about 25%. There is no way she will unite the anti-MacKay vote. Dion is unpopular and a lot of people won’t be following instructions and will park their votes for Mackay or the NDP candidate. Nor with the NDP vote, which is a labor/blue collar vote, bolt to May in any significant numbers.

  22. Shes right about the Progressive Conservative party, the current Conservative party is just using the “Conservative ” title to keep its old heritage or kindred voter base… Really they are a wolf in sheeps clothings… too many people are ignorant about this fact…

Theyre true name should be the toxic party of police state canada…

  23. care to eleborate on this? seeing as the Greens now have more suport than ever before? Even a recent survey by the Globe and Mail shows the Green Partys popular suport to be above that of the NDP

i think May has been great for the Greens, not destoryed it

  24. Elizabeth’s campaign site has a list of reasons why she is running in Central Nova. Also, check out the party policy at the Green Party website, to see how broad the platform has become.

  25. Horse shit! she has no chance, I’m from New Glasgow Nova Scotia and I think May should of ran in Cape Breton where she is from and ran on a platform of cleaning up the Sydney tarn ponds, she is a one issue, green party candidate after all.

  26. The last election was fun because it was held during the school year. That doubled the population of antigonish, and gave it 20 times the level of educated people.

I wish i was still in Antigonish just so i could vote for May 😀

  27. No kidding, hard to see where it will go. The Liberals and Greens are working hard to make Atlantic Canada a battleground for the old Red Tory/progressive conservative vote.. In other words, they’re trying to prevent Harper from moving to the middle by splitting the right again. Its almost pure politics …

  28. Except for the people who wanted to vote Liberal. They’ll get stuck voting for their 2nd choice which will probably be Conservative or NDP since they’re the ones who garner most of the votes in the area.

  29. As for Afghanistan, how do you explain the dramatic increase of opium production by 59% in 2006 alone? The blaming of the now murdered Afghan civilians for 9/11? Also, there’s the more recent abuse of detainees, and don’t tell me no laws were violated because it’s been proven otherwise. Even Harper won’t deny global warming. By the way there are freezing temperatures elsewhere because of EXTREME weather! Do some research.

  30. “Lie-berals”? Morons? How very clever of you. Nice job assuming I’m aLiberal because I dislike neocons. As for Health care, the Canadian Medical Association disagrees. Just like with the environment, he keeps delaying, and like with the Liberals, wait times won’t matter when we can’t afford it.

  31. Of course it’s a socialist plot. It was hatched by leftists. Earth is warmed by the Sun and the Sun’s rays are getting hotter. Besides, while global warming was going on a few weeks ago at some obscure point on the planet, parts of Canada were still receiving snow and freezing temperatures. Global Warming my ass!

Also, Global Warming and the Kyoto Conspiracy were specifically designed to omit the World’s real polluter, China. The Chinese don’t give a shit how much they pollute the planet.? They just want their factories to churn out their cheap junk, make lots of money, and destroy Western economies.

Angus Reid is a renowned liar and creator of fake polls. The Lie-berals pay Reid to come up with all sorts of fake polls about the environment and especially to show that their party is tied or ahead of the Conservatives. Reid also had a few years ago that infamous fake? “75% of Canadians support gun control” poll. Oh yeah? Where is that 75% hiding? LOL

Orchard is a dumb asshole and a farmer. He isn’t even a Conservative. He was a? mole or spy for the Lie-berals or NDP.

  32. Hey, montrealman,
    a) Global Warming is a not a socialist scam. If only it were! In fact, it hardly bodes well for socialist ideals of big, centralized government. The solutions for GG’s are decentralized and local efficiency and innovation-driven in most sectors.

b)Actually, according to polls Canadians do see the environment as the most important issue. (Google “angus-reid canadians key issue”)

    c) Ask David Orchard what happened when he thought MacKay was a man of integrity.

  33. May doesn’t stand a chance because:

    a) Global Warming is a socialist scam.
    b) The majority of Canadians aren’t concerned about the environment.
    c) McKay is a man of integrity and belongs to the most honest and effective political party Canada’s got.

  34. One last thing. If you look at energy efficiency and use per individual, & capita, China’s emits significantly less (one-tenth less) quantities of GHGs. The problem is China’s overpopulation, not wastefulness, but they’re currently addressing the overpopulation issue.

  35. Actually, they’re making progress on healthcare. The provinces have never had more money from the Federal government, and they actually working together on wait times – see my video “Healthcare Wait Times Guarantee”. Video ID JrePOsVHVgc

  43. The Green Party has no hope in hell to win this riding. I don’t support canadas far left partys, but if May wants a seat, way not run in some place like BC or ontario? She would have a better chance there.

  44. The Green Party has happened, and polls at or over 10 percent. Conservatives only have roughly 3 to 4 times the support of the Green Party, yet our electoral system is manipulated by the people in power to keep 1/3 of the population away from bothering to even vote, and more from ever casting a ballot for someone who can speak for them in the House.

I dare say what is happening in the world is a Green Party strength, as they have ties to parties in governments all around the world.

  45. This party has no idea what is going on in the world. Bleeding heart hippies like this? may likely manipulate politically illiterate voters to gain some power. For the world’s sake, let’s home that the “Green Party” will never happen in Canada.

  46. First, our Afghanistan mission is NOT a disaster. The Health Care system fell apart under the Liberals, many MPs have mused about privatization, and your “list” is essentially a list of LIBERAL failures.
They aren’t neocons, you’re just fearmongering.

  50. The environment problems and Afghanistan conflict (which I support for the time being) are not “Neocon”. The party ruling for 13 years before was responsable for that. May to be running against Mackay in a non-agression pact with Dion is saying “I don’t care how I get there, if I have to side with a man who’s environment record is abismal or piss on the electoral process I just wanna be on TV”. Besides, all this will do is kill the NDP numbers and create a greater margin for Mackay.

  55. They ARE neocons. Even they admitted to failing to disclose the source of campaign funds. Our policy toward Afghanistan & it’s opium farms is a disaster, they would allow the destruction of public health care..it goes on and on. It’s not name-calling, you’re just blind.

  56. #3 is just bullshit. Firstly, labeling the Conservatives in Canada as neocons sidesteps any meaningful debate, indeed it sidesteps reality. If anything, the Conservative Party has been criticized for moving to far toward the so-called middle of the political spectrum (but not by me). If you have allegations of electoral fraud, you should bring them to Elections Canada, otherwise stop your juvenile name calling.

  57. #2 is true, so far, but I hope Elizabeth May does find her way into the televised debates in the next election. The media outlets haven’t made their decision yet, but it would be difficult precedent for the media outlets to set as it could lead to including all 13 registered political in the debates. This might be entertaining, but probably not good for the public policy debate.

  58. #1 is true, and it is interesting to note that over 80% of donations to the Conservative Party came from individual donations rather than corporations or unions (in 1995, the most recent reporting year). The Accountability Act is now law, and it limits donations to individuals only, and only up to $1100 per year.

  59. She hasn’t got a chance.
    1) MacKay has a tn of money behind him
    2) The greens can’t even get on the debates
    3) Neocons fix elections, so MacKay will win easy
