Green Party leader Elizabeth May challenges Peter McKay
March 18, 2007 – Green Party leader Elizabeth May decides to run in Foreign Affairs Minister Peter McKay’s home riding in the next federal election.
May’s denies rumours that she made a deal with the Liberal Party so they would not run a candidate against her in Central Nova.
May also laments the loss of the former Progressive Conservative party, claiming the current Conservative party is too close to George Bush.

lol EPIC FAIL!!! i believe they lost 50 percent of their seats in canada… so now they are down to 1. haha the greens should go smoke dope and listen to the beetles when ever politics come up… thats what they do best.

The mean temperature in the last decade has fallen about .6 degress. No sun spots now for over 2 years and none are expected for about another 30 years, so the temperature will fall even more. Why don’t you study this instead of just shooting off your big mouth.

ETA: what was so great about the old PC’s? The fact is the old “Red Tories” were always a minority and Harper isn’t governing all that different from Mulroney (i.e. slavishly pro-U.S., courting Quebec, etc.) and if I were an ex-Reformer I’d think he’s a total sellout. As for the argument that the new Conservatives are illegitimate because they’re not part of the Canadian tradition, how can she justify running for and leading an even bigger abberation – the Green Party?!

Unfortunately for May Central Nova is a horrible fit. The Greens only got 1.5% of the vote last time and the Libs came in third with about 25%. There is no way she will unite the anti-MacKay vote. Dion is unpopular and a lot of people won’t be following instructions and will park their votes for Mackay or the NDP candidate. Nor with the NDP vote, which is a labor/blue collar vote, bolt to May in any significant numbers.

Also, there’s the more recent abuse of detainees, and don’t tell me no laws were violated because it’s been proven otherwise. Even Harper won’t deny global warming. Conservatives only have roughly 3 to 4 times the support of the Green Party, yet our electoral system is manipulated by the people in power to keep 1/3 of the population away from bothering to even vote, and more from ever casting a ballot for someone who can speak for them in the House.

The environment problems and Afghanistan conflict (which I support for the time being) are not “Neocon”. The party ruling for 13 years before was responsable for that. May to be running against Mackay in a non-agression pact with Dion is saying “I don’t care how I get there, if I have to side with a man who’s environment record is abismal or piss on the electoral process I just wanna be on TV”. Besides, all this will do is kill the NDP numbers and create a greater margin for Mackay.

#3 is just bullshit. Firstly, labeling the Conservatives in Canada as neocons sidesteps any meaningful debate, indeed it sidesteps reality. If anything, the Conservative Party has been criticized for moving to far toward the so-called middle of the political spectrum (but not by me). If you have allegations of electoral fraud, you should bring them to Elections Canada, otherwise stop your juvenile name calling.

#2 is true, so far, but I hope Elizabeth May does find her way into the televised debates in the next election. The media outlets haven’t made their decision yet, but it would be difficult precedent for the media outlets to set as it could lead to including all 13 registered political in the debates. This might be entertaining, but probably not good for the public policy debate.

#1 is true, and it is interesting to note that over 80% of donations to the Conservative Party came from individual donations rather than corporations or unions (in 1995, the most recent reporting year). The Accountability Act is now law, and it limits donations to individuals only, and only up to $1100 per year.

She hasn’t got a chance.
1) MacKay has a tn of money behind him
2) The greens can’t even get on the debates
